The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

I just got back from seeing the Dark Knight Rises and I loved it so much that I had to make a journal entry JUST to tell you I saw it with absolutely nothing substantive to say. I FUCKING LOVED IT. I teared up several times, I got boyishly excited and almost cheered out loud for Batman to succeed, I CARED. Chris Nolan's biggest weakness (in my opinion) had always been that he was weak at eliciting emotion, but he DESTROYED that weakness in this movie. GUSH GUSH GUSH

So Superman. I've been pretty pessimistic about this movie so far...but wow this teaser was really intriguing.. I don't think David Goyer is a very strong writer (I'm doubly skeptical because he had to rush this script out) and I don't think Zack Snyder is a very strong director, but as a coworker pointed out, this teaser feels extremely unlike anything Zack Snyder has done so far. It gave me a lot more optimism. Check it out:

I felt this one was the most comic-y one, and that was excellent, just like X-Men 3 was the most comic-y one.

I am very fanatical about Batman, and I was not disappointed at all. I was pleased, hugely pleased.

best finale to a trilogy ever. everything came together so well from batman begins to the dark knight to the dark knight rises. what most people don't get is these weren't batman films, these were about bruce wayne. his story ended perfectly. the symbol of batman was left in worthy hands. leaving the audience wanting more. isn't that what films are about?

Overall, I really enjoyed the movie, though the further away I am from the film, the more I see the plot holes (but, then again, I have the same issue with The Dark Knight, and I still think that movie is crazy awesome.) I think that the title unfairly ties it to the second film too tightly, when in fact it's a natural continuation of the entire narrative, and has more to do with Batman Begins than TDK. I feel no shame in admitting that the ending got to me, and that, though I know the series is over, I wouldn't mind seeing a progression from the open doors left by this conclusion.

I'm also intrigued by Superman; it seems like they are going with a Superman that is a bit more engrained in the human condition (taking grunt jobs, learning about people in general) while also going for the iconic elements of the character. That voice over by Jor El was really awesome... just wish I could see more.

I agree with everything except the progression. I feel like it needs to be left with that ending that has us wanting more.

I have no idea how to feel about Superman. I don't have a ton of faith in Goyer or Snyder but the leaked comic con footage and the teaser both have me feeling cautiously optimistic.

I agree that it's a good spot to get off the ride and think about what would happen next without actually seeing it. It's the difference between the first Matrix movie and the sequels, where the first one worked well because it had an open ending that left you imagining the continuation, while the sequels destroy that sense of wonder, and ultimately hurt the first one. Also, this movie had Batman in it. That already makes it better than most movies.
I guess you can't help but wonder what would happen next... which is a great sign for an engaging narrative (though there are some assumptions you really have to make so that the story works.) I'm still watching it again!

Haha man, it was the greatest movie of the year (yeah even better than Avengers). I also love there's finally an end to Batman's story, while it will never end in the comics.
