FUCK someone needs to do this movie properly.  I actually don't think you can really make a Dune movie, but whatever.  I'd still geekgasm all over the place if they made a decent one.

*EDIT* I just saw who's writing and directing and I really hope this movie doesn't get made.

Well, let's face the cold, rotten facts. :p Almost all of the big movies made in the last few years have been re-makes, re-imaginings, or sequels, and they all made butt-tons of money. What I don't understand is why they go down a list of things which are sacred to a distinct niche of people and then design them to appeal to people who don't give a crap about the franchise. Are there no writers with original material to fuel a blockbuster movie? I guess it's inevitable that Dune would come up again. "Hey, wasn't there some desert movie back in the 80s that made a few bucks?" "Oh yeah, Dune! Written by Fritz Helbet, we can make a SICK action movie out of that!"

I was pretty surprised that something as new as District 9 actually got made. Hollywood views original material as a risk, whereas a franchise is instant bank.

Yeah that's what it is. People like to say that hollywood ran out of ideas or whatever, but that's not the case at all. There are tons of writers and directors with their own ideas in Hollywood. Producers investing millions of dollars want to do everything in their power to make sure they get their money back, so they go with what's safe.

You got it. :D That said, I will probably watch the Dune movie if it's made. Just like the Star Trek movie, it will probably be entertaining and action-packed, even if it lacks any sort of complex plot or depth of thought.

I tried to go back and watch the David Lynch movie while hopelessly bored and on pain meds for an injury and still couldn't even bring myself to watch the whole thing...

I'm not a fan of the books written by his son, but everything written to Frank Herbert is gold in my opinion.

Yeah I think It'd have to be a series, but then again , Sci Fi already tried that. An we all know how THAT turned out <_<;

I think a series doesn't really work because 80% of what makes Dune amazing is what's going on in the characters' heads, which is the strength of a book. Having thoughts portrayed visually (through character's actions) is the strength of a movie and I think Dune just will NOT translate well because of how much the book takes advantage of its medium.

Yeah I totally agree there. I think all this filming classic ideas though is just part of the audience's love for seeing things in "real life". Film of-course being as close to that as fantasy is going to get . (until someone invents some good holographics )

It's quite weird that you posted about Dune, my friends and I have just been talking about the series for the last week. The later books get really weird with God Emperor Leto.

And no, a Dune movie can't be properly made because to really do justice to it unless they did 5 movies for every book, which would just be frustrating.
