JLA CG Concepts - Wonder Woman by DanielAraya JLA CG Concepts - Wonder Woman by DanielAraya
A few weeks ago, just for fun I started doing concepts for a faux Justice League CG movie. I've always been a huge fan of Bruce Timm and the DC Timmverse he helped create, and I thought it would be cool to basically design the JLA movie that I would direct if given the chance. I didn't do any huge drastic changes because I didn't want to betray the characters in terms of who they are and what they're about. I just wanted to build on what's already been established and tweak things the way I saw them. I was going to wait until I had more artwork before I posted this, but with all the freelance I've got, I don't think I'll be able to work on this again for a while.

THIS IMAGE: I went with angry, warrior, man hating Wonder Woman. I feel like if you're raised your entire life immersed in bigotry, you're not just going to change your beliefs after a single adventure. It's not gonna be like "oh these guys fought with me to save the world, men aren't so bad." Nobody just drops prejudiced opinions like that, they skew and distort things to keep supporting and maintaining their discrimination. I feel like her acceptance of men would be a very slow, gradual thing and it would never be 100%. I was mostly inspired by Darwyn Cooke's design with some tweaks here and there where I thought it made more sense or would add some appeal.

Nice work and rationale behind the character.  Her gender bigotry is her Achilles heel.

I love how you interpret wonder woman to have a dislike in men. That gives her a charcter flaw which builds to a good story. Batmans would be his sociopathic behavior, supermans would be his distants away from humanity, and wonder womans (like you said) dislike to mens arrogance. If dc builds these characters arcs together in a movie or tv show, that would be amazing!

I LOVE this design of her! I kind of want to try modeling it, just to see--but I don't know if you'd be okay with that, haha.

And I thought she was pissed because of her nappy hair.

Love the design and the shine on all the gold areas. She totally looks like she can kick some serious butt.

I like angry Diana. I agree with you about her attitude, especially away from home. I love the grim pissed-off look. She even looks hateful. I'd say the scene in your drawing is right after she knocked the consciousness out of some male villain. Very well drawn, sir!

Great job. I've always thought that the proper way to view Wonder Woman in the modern age is as a warrior like Xena. You ditched the stripper costume and made her look badass, while keeping enough of the old look to acknowledge tradition. Way to go!

I love the design, but I kind of have to disagree with the bigotry interpretation (though that's the cool thing about DC characters: that they CAN be interpreted). I've always viewed Wonder Woman as a character who saw all living things as being of equal value. That she's a warrior for peace, as ironic as it sounds.

Yeah. I will say I think your interpretation would work really well in terms of giving her a character arc. If I were to direct it I'd have her spend the majority of the film trying to take on whatever threat the League is up against on her own, with the rest of the League gradually earning her trust. I know I commented on the other piece you did but I have to repeat your designs would be amazing, both in live action or animation.

Nice design, but if Diana was consistently a misandrist (someone who hates men), than I'd have no good reason to like her. I don't like man-haters, or the reverse for that matter.

And Diana's not always a misandrist either. It depends largely on the interpretation, but not every version of Diana, and the Amazons as a whole for that matter, are man-hating b***s, at least not to the point of full-blown hostility, but whatever. It is a nice-looking design either way, but I would say that Diana should probably want to have more full-covering shorts underneath that skirt of hers, lest some perv try and take a peek at what's underneath when she's flying..

I think your quote "It depends largely on the interpretation" kinda says it all. That's my interpretation of the character. I've seen versions where the Amazons try to kill men who trespass on their island, which to me is indicative of a pretty deep underlying prejudice. And that quality wouldn't stay with her, that's the point of a character arc.

You said "never completely go away". I tend not to be too crazy about people who'd kill you just for being a certain gender, but to each his own. It is the interpretations where they're trigger-happy and bloodthirsty concerning men that I like less.

Well that's the point. That's not something you're supposed to like about her, it's the character flaw that she gradually overcomes through her interactions with the rest of the JLA. That's what a character arc is. I say "never completely go away" because I don't believe deep-rooted social inclinations like bigotry can just magically vanish after one adventure, I think it would take LOTS of time because otherwise, to me, that would not be believable writing. I also think it's bad writing to only give characters desirable attributes. I think that sort of writing is inauthentic and lacks depth.

Flaws are important yes, but some flaws are more tolerable than others. There's no good way for me to word this, so this likely won't sound as I intended it to, but whatever.

To me personally, it is a fine line between flawed yet interesting, versus flawed and off-putting. I don't like or admire bigots by and large. Again, yes, flaws are often what make a character interesting, but not if they come at the cost of making you want to still root for the character. A person could be inept at times, careless at other times, struggle with relationships, say things they shouldn't say, etc, etc, but still have redeeming qualities to balance it out. But someone who's unlikable as a result of their flaws is not someone I would want to root for or invest in. At least that's just how I see it. And bigotry to me does make someone pretty unlikable by and large. It doesn't matter if she's supposedly a superhero. If I have to listen to prejudiced viewpoints, I'm not going to be in a position to root for her, because the flaw makes her too unlikable, at least to me.

Also, if she is a man-hating b***, then why bother working with the male member of the Justice League at all? After all, she hates men. So if that's the case, why ever work with them? Its the same problem I had with the way she was portrayed in the awful "All Star Batman and Robin": what would ever prompt her to ever fight alongside members of the gender she views as despicable in the first place? I suppose maybe some global catastrophe, but once that's been averted, what would ever prompt her to stick with the men if she's still mostly a misandrist? Just saying. It'd be kind of hard to work on a team when you still hate all members of something all of your teammates are, in this case, men.

For WW's costume design, did you study and take inspiration from ancient Greek armor for this piece as I see in her "skirt", or was it just a happy accident?

A very good rendering of what I feel Wonder Woman should look like if/when she makes it to the silver screen; her costume should be more like armor than spandex. And that is an element of her character taht is so often overlooked: she is a semi-sexist character, more than a little biased toward men. A good subplot fora future Justlice League film would be her hesitance to save the world alongside a group of men, and perhaps her prejudice against them softening when she see's these others setting a good example.

I am rewatching the JLA now, and althought I love diana the way she is, it actually bothered me how open she is to man. Not really bother, more like....seemed a bit off.

It makes sense that growing up in an all women island she would have some misconceptions about men, but that is not even mentioned.

I don't think Diana would be an angry man hater, she seems very open minded to me (at least in the animated series, I didn't read the comics, unfortunately). But given her background I imagined she wouldn't be so friendly towards men, if anything always keep her guard up around then. I think that even in this case she can go trough a character arc where she has to learn to trust men and not let her prejudices take the best of her. But I don't see her actually hating anyone XD

Sorry for the long post, I just thought your rendering of her really interesting and the desing looks like and actual warrior, always battle ready =)

I tend to think of Diana's sexism as seeing men as inferior. It's not aggressive, she's not aggressive (a warrior, but not aggressive) so she doesn't hate men, she just doesn't understand them. So raised on stereotypes and misconceptions (men are dumb, crude, barbaric, smelly, bad table manners, etc.), but after saving the world with the JLA Wonder Woman would slowly come to grow to love "her boys."

Just my two cents. Carry on. :)

I didn't think I'd ever see a more possible realistic takes on wonder woman's costume, but you nailed it! Definitely getting a "God of War" vibe from this peace. I always felt the stars near the blue were a bit too much.

Congrats on getting featured on Geek Tyrant! I would love to see more justice league art from you, you have my full support to joining the industry as a storyboard artist, or something greater.

Coming from a diehard Marvel geek, I can honestly say if Wonder Woman actually looked like this and followed some of your ideas, mixed with a few of the comments I read, I'd be a fan for life. She looks really, like, 'Don't f*ck with me' and I love it. She also has a cast of nobility in the set of her eyes, nose and lips that remind me that though she's a warrior, she's also a princess. I also really dig that you didn't go for balls-out sexualization, as this is one WW I believe could handle herself in a fight. Very well done my friend. ;)
