JLA CG Concepts - Green Lant by DanielAraya JLA CG Concepts - Green Lant by DanielAraya
A few weeks ago, just for fun I started doing concepts for a faux Justice League CG movie. I've always been a huge fan of Bruce Timm and the DC Timmverse he helped create, and I thought it would be cool to basically design the JLA movie that I would direct if given the chance. I didn't do any huge drastic changes because I didn't want to betray the characters in terms of who they are and what they're about. I just wanted to build on what's already been established and tweak things the way I saw them. I was going to wait until I had more artwork before I posted this, but with all the freelance I've got, I don't think I'll be able to work on this again for a while.

THIS IMAGE: I thought it would be cool if his outfit was more of a manifestation of the ring's power as opposed to just cloth. I think that's the angle the live action movie is taking too, so I thought I'd do my version of that idea. I thought it would be cool if the green parts were constantly shifting, and seemed like you were looking inside some kind of unstable, nebulous energy reaction. I went with the spots because I was paying homage to that swiss cheese effect that Jack Kirby used to do whenever he drew energy.

"You don't wanna go mess your day by messing with me, right? 'Cause that's one helluva bad idea."
Can you not see him say that?
Anyways, like how he turned out. The 'swiss cheese' energy effect is really nice, and I can almost see how awesome it would be in animation. I've always preffered this guy to Hal, maybe because he's more badass, but holy cow, this is the PERSONIFICATION of badass! SWEET work!

Great choice in using the John Stewart version of Green Lantern, not only because it includes a black character in an all too white group, but also from a personality and back story perspective. He's the only hero in the DC universe who chose not to wear a mask, in order to be an example to his community. I also like your choice of the bald head, goatee look for him. I do have to agree with RedAviary on the green distribution; too much up top and not enough below. John Stewart's costume typically has green up top and at the boots, with black in between.

I like the idea that his costume is a construct of his ring, but the patter you have in the green area makes me think more of a lava lamp than energy. Perhaps something more like the arm of the middle example:

Yeah I used to work with Nate. My image is more than two years old, if I were to do it again I would do it more like Nate's version

Out of all the designs his looks the most neutral. Wonder Womans looks fierce, Batmans looks intimidating and Superman looks friendly. GL here looks the most neutral, and balanced in personality.

Probably my least favorite of your JLA designs. All that green in the lower torso and waist should be shifted down and made into boots, and the insignia should look more traditional -- it's a badge for an interstellar police force, after all, so it should be more recognizable at first glance.

Just my opinion though. It's still a great effort. I like the waviness of the energy in the green in particular.

I don't think the green should be shifted down. That draws the eye lower and there is no point in that. I also don't necessarily think the insignia needs to look more traditional but to each his own. Thanks for the comments.

John Stewart has to be my favourite Lantern...undoubtedly because of watching Justice League on television but I've been reading some comics lately as well and I like him there too. I love the look of his outfit here and I have to say the uniform being a manifestation of the ring is a much more appealing idea I think. I like your idea of it shifting and changing continuously.

Your Green Lantern costume is immediately better than that God awful movie version. How did you render these?

I never really liked John Stewart. He struck me as kind of bland. The League's got enough humorless straight-men. I prefer Kyle Rayner. Dude's a cartoonist!

A gritty, simply practical; yet, original re-imagining. Once again; you have made the character your own. I, also, agree with the "ring" empowering everything. Cloth is too...regular; for an interstellar, "quantum physical/ supernatural", styled warrior's armor.

Sorry for rambling. But, your work is like a "tutorial": It inspires, as well as, educates.

Thank you, for sharing.

Um, awesome~ loving the green gush texture!!! and I like the lantern logo! how neat!
I also like the black netting-looking material in his suit, how long did that take? well, it seems all of it would take a while, I'll say it again, the detail is break taking!!

I also like his look, its determined but not scary (like Batsy and WW)

The black netting stuff was mostly a carbon fiber photo texture that I warped and manipulated to fit the image.

you know whats also kinda ironic? the way things are going in Young Justice, who knew Batman would get father of the year award while superman gets emo over the word "father" lol
